Chuck Dixon (w) • Alex Cal (a) • Kelsey Shannon, Cal (c)

What starts as a desert survival exercise for the Joes turns into a fight for survival, with COBRA soldiers sent to find the Pit. Unarmed and out of communication, Covergirl, Downtown, and Tripwire must outwit, outlast, and outkill COBRA's best if they want to stay alive and prevent the disclosure of the Pit's secret location. The start of an all-new storyline, featuring art by Alex Cal (G.I. Joe Origins: Mainframe).

Downtown as a featured character? Interesting choice, and it looks like we also get more exposure for Tripwire. I applaud IDW for giving us fresh characters instead of the same old standbys over and over again (not that there's anything wrong with those standbys, of course).

It'll also be interesting to see how Downtown interacts with Scarlett, considering that Scarlett pretty much beat the tar out of him back in issue #11. I predict fireworks.

Also, why does Scarlett have blonde hair on that cover?

That's not Scarlett. IDW's Cover Girl has the blonde hair from the cartoon version of her.

New Mortar guy from 1989. Same specialty as Short Fuze. (Actually same title as Short Fuze. Looks like the filecards list the specialties different.)

I feel really dumb now. For some reason I read Scarlett instead of Cover Girl in that solicit.

Downtown also made a recent appearance in IDW's #9 & #11 helping Scarlett as a lawyer.

"Alex Cal (a)"

Can we assume that's a mistake since Shannon's name is on the cover?

that's where i was confused. i stopped collecting the toys towards the end of the 80s, so i never knew downtown from the original line (could be wrong, don't i think he was ever showcased in one of the marvel stories, either). then, when he showed up in the new comics as a former attorney, i guess i just assumed he was an idw creation... like labrat, brainstorm, etc.

I can't wait! No SE no Scarlett, no Duke although I guess the Vipers will catch the MASS device to get there, but they just got that thing working. I guess Cobra blew up the first PITT in issue #18-19 so we're right on track.

Why is Dusty not the guy training them?

You know this issue has the feeling like the other Tripwire issue, #13 with Beach Head, just a great one issue type of mission that really shows off the best parts Joe. Plus, if it gives us a little bit of the side stories going on it that is what makes for a great Joe book.

And I bet Dusty makes an appearance but he just isn't the main character. Just guessing at that.

Bleak-
Yeah Alex was originally slated to do the book but had schedule conflicts so I stepped in. It was after I pitched in on 16, and recently finished 19. Sorry for the confusion, but hopefully not everyone will be disappointed to see my work on the next two issues.

This does look like a solid, self contained sotry. I am loving these! They keep the main story rolling along with a different perspective from some second tier characters. Although, Cover Girl seems to be getting a lot of page time. Of course, her name IS Cover Girl!

I am excited for some more of Shannon on GI Joe, also! I like when they rotate in a great artist who knows the characters! Reminds me of when Leonardi would fo fill-ins on Uncanny, back in the day!

Looking very forward to this!
