I got a negative on the death counter now. It's a cool idea in theory. But it updates automatically and I while I know it includes more then just character deaths? I don't really want to see the "numbers" until I get the blasted book in hand. In my opinion that counts as a spoiler. No I don't know if it's named Joes or IDW "greenshirts", but still. (And I say greenshirts cause "fobbits" sounds stupid IMO.) Hell...some of you guys go awhile between getting your books, but I could do without the update on the counter until Thursday. And no. I will not just stay away from the forums. Staying out of threads with "spolier" on it cause I don't have an issue yet is one thing, but off the boards altogether? Yeah...

Try looking left and scrolling down real fast.

Kidding.

I think Thursday is reasonable. But it does have a cool effect of creating a "wanting to know" kind of feeling, I haven't gotten it digitally yet. So I am WAITING & WAITING.

Not any better or worse than the last dozen issues of the volume one.

Art style is a lttle different. Still technically sound, but I would prefer Cal, Gallant, or Atkins.

While I am happy the Commander contest has already increased the on panel action, I think the premise is a little silly especially given the more serious tone IDW has been trying to create. Also wish less brand new characters were involved.

I am right there with you on the "greenshirts" Ghost X.
1) Now I don't want to see every named Joe killed, but really? This is the only gripe I can find with this issue. Too many newbies. They are all I am expecting to die. Having already seen the numbers on this issue before hand? I was counting and by the time I was at the PIT pages with Hawk? I was "Ok. One more left. Who is getting it as I know this ain't Hawk?" Plus I blinked and missed "Blacklight's" partner getting killed. I had to go back and look twice. Also...could we not have had "Blacklight" get killed as well? The character is stupid as a Cobra sniper when we have BlackOUT as a Cobra with a freaking TOY. Would rather have seen HIM.
2) Bonus poster? Awesome. I don't get the incentive covers so great addition for me. Guess IDW is trying to make up for that missing poster in the CC "Tribute" reprint spactacular. You know? The one all you suckers wasted $7.99 on?

Okay, I never say this... but the art is less than spectacular. If IDW needs new artists, there's plenty to go around. Scarlett with her navel bared? Really? You all want realism??? This artist needs kicked in the nuts... If IDW doesn't want to do superhero comics, don't hire amateurs who draw this kind of adolescent crap...

Sorry. I just had to vent...

My biggest complaint is about Recondo. In Marvel /DD, he had such a distinct look and feel, a truly a unique appearance. That being said, why on God
s green Earth would the artist make him look like a regular old green shirt? Come on IDW! You're really starting to annoy me!

Expanded thoughts that I posted on IDW forums.

Not a perfect relaunch by a long shot and so here are my thoughts on issue #28. Yeah, a new #1? It ain't reader friendly if you have not read the past two years. Basic concept of Joe/Cobra my ***. How many will be asking "Who are these characters?"? And that's my main gripe so...
1) The casualties counter needs to update on Friday. Don't want/need to see numbers before reading the issue. The people who don't have issue by then? I don't know what to say if you can't get the issue sooner and care about that being an issue.
2) The biggest gripe I have on the issue? The "greenshirt" syndrome. All these available Joes/Cobras and we get endless supplies of them. Having seen the counter early Wednesday? I was counting them off as the story went. Oops. Issue is ending. Who's getting it when Zartan gets where he is going? (It was way obvious that's who Hawk really was.)
3) Yeah. I blinked and missed BlackLIGHT's partner getting killled. I would rather it have been Blacklight getting killed. You know why? We have a Cobra sniper. His name is BlackOUT. Would it kill IDW to stop making new characters when we have so many blasted toys available? Really? And on that note...
4) Yeah, it seems we can't even get old favorites that look like they are suppose to. Recondo and Leatherneck have already been mentioned in this thread.
5) I swear with the above points I have made? It seems Chuck Dixon is writing an army book with VERY few characters from the toyline we love and ones that actually look like we remember. I can take variations on backstory and the like, but really? Get the characters looking like they use to. Character design tweaks are ok as well, but make it within the confines of the old look. I loved DDP's redesigned Destro look, but hated their Mainframe design for example.
6) What's the deal with "red eyes" in the issue? That looks like he has cyborg eyes and that leans on sci fi side to me.
7) Mass device gets a passing mention? I can deal with that. However...I don't give a crap to hear concern from Scarlett about the stranded moon base Cobras. I also don't want story pages wasted on a rescue. Let them rot and bury that page/script waster.
8- Bonus poster? Nice. Won't make up for the suckers that bought the CC tribute and was suppose to get a kill shot poster, but with me not getting the RI cover? Sweet!
This post might come off as me still being negative, but the greenshirt issue has been there all along for me. It was just overshadowed by the sci fi issue. Mass device/Zartan/"smoke monster" Destro so...

I really enjoyed the story, so good old fashion jungle warfare with grenades beating snipers.

That is the kind of Dixon story we all love to read.

Now why he won't let the moon crap stuff go I have no idea. Enough, I don't want to see the Defiant Shuttle that much.

And Apeface what kind of crap codename is that.

Anyway, other than those complaients I really enjoyed it for a start.

I appreciated that line. It was such a creepy ending to #27 that it would feel weird if no one ever acknowledged it. I feel the same way about the MASS device. I'm glad that we're moving away from it but I would call BS if it were never brought up again.

OK, I have a dumb question - how does the timeline work here?

SPOILERS

We see Helix at the Pit getting chewed out by fake Hawk, then she's in the mountains with Snake Eyes, Alpine, and Iceberg. When does the Snake Eyes story take place in relation to the fake Hawk accessing the Pit?

I'm guessing Snake-Eyes 1 took place before G.I. Joe 1. It could be the other way around, but that seemed like the real Hawk in the Snake-Eyes book.

to the above two posts....thats one of my gripes as you can see in the se book forum. its going to be a wacky time line head splitting things like trying to read a wolverine book when he is also in the x-men book doing something totally different on the other side of the world yet when it comes cross over time things seem to match up all of a sudden and wolvie is right there in the mix. im guessing once the civil war comes to a close se will blend back in to the regular book and his will get canceled. what really can be so interesting in his book after the war? the only thing that could get me interested in it is if he takes a leave of absence from the joes for awhile to clear his head after his team was killed and he goes back to the clans HQ in japan and centers himself again, maybe takes on helix as a master and apprentice kinda thing.?!

on a side note we know if we see a new joe in the book he is going to die, not beating that drum here but wouldnt it be funny if they all appeared in red shirts as a nod to star trek! hahahahaaaa :2guns:

For me, the biggest selling point of this book is that it will feature Joes that have had little to no page time in the main series. So the cover may say "Snake-Eyes" but in my mind it's "Special Missions featuring Snake-Eyes and friends".
